EDWARD T. MALONE
Edward T. Malone, or Ned as he is called, is the only American on the Challenger expedition. He is a journalist
working for the World Herald Tribune. One of the reasons he is going on the expedition is to prove to Gladys, the publisher's
daughter, that he can be a man of adventure and daring and worthy of her hand in marriage.
During the Great War, Malone served as a correspondent for the Balloon Observer Corps.
Malone is the first one of the expedition to meet the jungle-raised Veronica when she rescues him from a carnivorous
plant.
Malone is the chronicler of the expedition's adventures. He hopes to publish his journals upon his retrurn
to London, and dreams of receiving the Pulitzer for his writings.
